Systemic modernization serves as the baseline for societal dignity and operational efficiency. Punjab recently deployed an electric shuttle service at District Jail Attock, marking a calibrated shift toward sustainable prison management. This initiative, designed under the provincial prison reform programme, streamlines the transit experience for families and visitors entering the correctional facility.
The Translation: Enhancing Jail Visitor Mobility
Traditional correctional facilities often prioritize perimeter security over logistical accessibility for the public. This initiative recalibrates that balance. By introducing an electric shuttle service, the Punjab Prisons Foundation addresses the “last mile” connectivity gap within the jail premises. Consequently, the transition from the main entrance to the visitors’ shed no longer requires strenuous physical exertion.

Home Secretary Dr. Ahmad Javed Qazi and Inspector General Prisons Punjab Mian Salik Jalal spearheaded the project’s strategic direction. Assistant Commissioner Attock Arif Mahmood Qureshi formally inaugurated the service. This fleet precisely targets the internal transport needs of the facility, ensuring that movement inside the compound remains fluid and organized.
The Socio-Economic Impact: Dignity in Transit
This technological integration directly benefits vulnerable demographics, including senior citizens, women, and persons with disabilities. Many families traveling from distant rural areas arrive at these facilities after exhausting journeys. By providing free, electrified transport, the government reduces the physical and psychological toll on these citizens. Key benefits include:
- Improved Accessibility: Elderly and disabled visitors no longer face long walks in harsh weather.
- Enhanced Safety: Controlled shuttle movement ensures a safer environment within the high-security perimeter.
- Operational Efficiency: Hundreds of visitors can now transition through security checkpoints with greater precision.
Superintendent District Jail Attock, Imran Naveed Ashraf, noted that the service creates a more comfortable environment for hundreds of daily visitors. This shift acknowledges that the families of inmates deserve a streamlined, respectful experience while interacting with the state’s correctional system.
The Forward Path: A Momentum Shift
This development represents a Momentum Shift in Punjab’s administrative strategy. Integrating green technology into the judicial infrastructure signals a commitment to long-term modernization rather than mere maintenance. While the current deployment remains localized to Attock, the structural success of this pilot program provides a scalable blueprint for statewide implementation. Precision-driven reforms like the electric shuttle service are essential catalysts for a more humane and efficient public system.
