Across Punjab and Islamabad, Punjab wheat prices have dramatically escalated over the past ten days. This sharp increase, approximately 3%, has pushed prices from Rs. 3,700 to an alarming Rs. 4,800 per maund. Consequently, consumers are now facing significant financial strain, impacting daily household budgets across the region.
Escalating Wheat Prices Across Major Cities
Various regions within Punjab and Islamabad report substantial price hikes. For instance, in Multan, wheat rates have reached Rs. 4,450 per maund. Furthermore, prices in Bahawalpur and Dera Ghazi Khan have climbed to around Rs. 4,400 per maund, reflecting a widespread trend. Islamabad has also witnessed a similar increase, with wheat prices now standing at Rs. 4,400 per maund.
Cities like Lahore are experiencing even higher rates. Here, wheat prices have soared to Rs. 4,450 per maund. Simultaneously, flour bag shortages have emerged in several parts of the city. Traders report increasing scarcity of 10 kg and 20 kg flour bags. Moreover, the price of a 15 kg flour bag has jumped significantly from Rs. 1,500 to Rs. 1,750. Additionally, Gujranwala and Gujrat are seeing wheat sold for up to Rs. 4,500 per maund, while Rawalpindi’s prices have peaked at Rs. 4,800 per maund.

Asim Raza, Central Chairman of the Flour Mills Association, confirms that a growing shortage of wheat directly fuels this sharp price rise. He issued a stern warning, stating that supplies are rapidly diminishing across the country. Therefore, these higher wheat prices directly push flour prices upward, creating a ripple effect on the entire food supply chain. Ultimately, this situation demands urgent attention from relevant authorities.
