Punjab’s New EV Policy: A Leap Towards Green Transportation
The Punjab government has unveiled a groundbreaking Punjab EV policy for its departmental vehicles. This landmark decision marks a significant stride towards sustainable transportation and environmental protection. Consequently, it demonstrates a strong commitment to curbing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly alternatives throughout the province.
Fundamentally, this new directive prohibits the procurement of new petrol and diesel-powered vehicles for all government departments. This policy aims to phase out conventional internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles within the public sector. Ultimately, it paves the way for a much greener and more sustainable fleet.

Embracing Electric and Hybrid Vehicles
The new Punjab EV policy mandates that government departments can only purchase electric or hybrid vehicles. This strategic shift will significantly cut government fuel consumption and operational costs. Moreover, it contributes to cleaner air quality across Punjab’s cities.
Although the rules are comprehensive, specific exemptions exist to ensure operational efficiency. Vehicles for critical field duties, needing particular performance, are temporarily exempt. This flexibility accounts for situations where EV or hybrid alternatives may not yet fully meet demands.
Boosting EV Charging Infrastructure in Punjab
Beyond vehicle purchases, the Punjab government is actively strengthening its EV charging infrastructure. A vital part of this new policy connects No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for new petrol pumps directly to the compulsory installation of EV charging units. This ensures readiness for the future.
This forward-thinking initiative guarantees that new fuel stations will also support the increasing demand for EV charging. Consequently, it builds a more accessible network for both public and private electric vehicle users. Authorities will only approve new petrol pumps once an electric charging unit is confirmed as installed and operational. No new pump can open without this critical facility.
Punjab’s Vision for Environmental Sustainability
The Chief Secretary of Punjab reaffirmed the government’s strong commitment to environmental protection. He emphasized that promoting green energy remains a primary goal. Furthermore, the province is soon launching a comprehensive new electric vehicle policy Punjab, set to boost EV adoption across many sectors.
Aligning with this vision, NOCs for 17 new petrol pumps have already been issued via the e-Biz Portal across 31 cities. This extensive rollout includes 29 pumps in Faisalabad, 14 in Lahore, one in Bahawalpur, and nine each in Khanewal and Bahawalnagar. Therefore, it showcases the policy’s wide reach and quick implementation.
Towards a Sustainable Future for Punjab
The mandatory installation of EV charging units at all new petrol pumps highlights the government’s commitment. This ensures wide availability of environmentally friendly energy for all consumers. Ultimately, this strategic initiative will transform Punjab’s transportation landscape. It will foster a cleaner, more sustainable environment for its citizens.
This bold move by the Punjab government sustainable transport initiative is likely to inspire other regions. It clearly demonstrates the vital role of public sector actions in achieving national environmental goals. Consequently, it promotes a truly sustainable future for Pakistan.
