OGDCL Announces Significant Oil and Gas Discovery in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
Pakistan’s energy landscape just received a substantial boost! Oil and Gas Development Company Limited (OGDCL) recently announced a major OGDCL oil and gas discovery at the Baragzai X-01 exploratory well. This significant find, located in the Nashpa Block, District Kohat, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, will notably expand the nation’s domestic energy resource base. Consequently, this development promises to help bridge Pakistan’s energy supply-demand gap.
OGDCL, serving as the operator of the Nashpa Exploration License, holds a 65 percent working interest. Furthermore, they collaborated with Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL), which possesses a 30 percent share, and Government Holdings (Private) Limited (GHPL), holding a 5 percent carried interest. This partnership underscores a collaborative effort to bolster Pakistan energy resources.
Unpacking the Baragzai X-01 Discovery
The Baragzai X-01 well yielded successful results in the Samana Suk and Shinawari formations. During Cased Hole Drill Stem Test-03 (CHDST-03), the well demonstrated impressive flow rates. Specifically, it flowed at 3,100 barrels of oil per day (BOPD) and 8.15 million standard cubic feet per day (MMSCFD) of gas. This remarkable performance occurred through a 32/64-inch choke, maintaining a wellhead flowing pressure of 3,010 psig, as disclosed by the company.
This discovery highlights the rich hydrocarbon potential within the region. Investors and energy stakeholders will keenly observe these promising figures.
Strategic Exploration in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa
The Baragzai X-01 (Slant) well began drilling on December 30, 2024. Its primary objective was to evaluate the hydrocarbon potential across various formations, including Lockhart, Hangu, Lumshiwal, Samana Suk, Shinawari, Datta, and Kingriali. Drilled to a total depth of 5,170 meters into the Kingriali Formation, this exploratory effort has been thorough. Prior testing in the Kingriali and Datta formations had already confirmed oil and gas finds, further enhancing the prospectivity of the Nashpa Block hydrocarbons.
This new Khyber Pakhtunkhwa exploration success reinforces the strategic importance of the region. Ultimately, OGDCL anticipates this latest discovery will significantly contribute to the hydrocarbon reserves of the company, its joint venture partners, and indeed, the entire country. This strengthens Pakistan’s path towards energy self-reliance.
