Doctors Urge Punjab Govt to Restore Maternity Care Under Health Card
The Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) Lahore has strongly condemned the Punjab government’s decision to exclude Gynecology and Obstetrics services from the Sehat Card scheme. This move is deemed cruel, irresponsible, and unjust, particularly impacting vulnerable women across the province. Consequently, medical professionals are urgently calling to restore maternity care under the health card program, ensuring essential services for all.
PMA Lahore’s Strong Condemnation
This forceful condemnation emerged during an emergency meeting of PMA Lahore, expertly chaired by President Prof Dr Shahid Malik. Several senior doctors, including Prof Dr Ashraf Nizami, Dr Irm Shehzadi, Dr Wajid Ali, Dr Bushra Haq, Dr Ahmed Naeem Akhtar, and Dr Maryam Fatima, attended this crucial gathering. Furthermore, PMA office bearers collectively labeled the decision a grave injustice to poor women, directly violating their fundamental right to accessible healthcare.

Dire Consequences for Women’s Health in Punjab
Medical experts warn that excluding maternity services will deprive millions of underprivileged women of essential care during pregnancy, childbirth, and treatment for gynecological diseases. Consequently, this denial could lead to a sharp rise in maternal and child mortality across Punjab. Most poor women simply cannot afford expensive private healthcare; therefore, accessible public schemes like the Sehat Card are vital for their well-being and survival.
Upholding the “Health for All” Vision
The PMA firmly believes this decision contradicts the very spirit of the Sehat Card program, which promises universal health coverage. Without prioritizing women’s health and ensuring comprehensive maternity coverage, the slogan “Health for All” loses its true meaning and impact. In contrast, an inclusive and equitable healthcare system is paramount for societal progress and national development.
A Direct Appeal to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz
The association has strongly urged Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to immediately withdraw this contentious decision. They emphasize the critical need to reinstate vital maternity services under the Sehat Card scheme, ensuring that no woman is left without access to essential healthcare during such a pivotal phase of her life. Ultimately, this action would reinforce the government’s commitment to public health and equitable access for all citizens.
