Pakistan is currently experiencing its first major cold wave, with sub-zero temperatures recorded across Quetta and northern Balochistan. The region’s inaugural winter snowfall has significantly dropped mercury levels, particularly as snow continues to fall in Chaman and surrounding areas. This early winter chill signals a challenging period for local communities.
Severe Cold Grips Northern Balochistan
Reports confirm ongoing snowfall across key northern Balochistan locations. These include Khojak Top, Khwaja Imran, Toba Achakzai, Qila Abdullah, Gulistan, Jangal Pir Alizai, Shela Bagh, and Mezai Adda. In Chaman, for instance, temperatures have plunged below freezing, intensifying the already severe cold spell. Consequently, residents are facing harsh conditions.

Record Lows in High-Altitude Areas
The Meteorological Department has confirmed Chaman’s temperature at a chilling -1°C. Furthermore, high-altitude regions recorded even more extreme conditions. Khojak Top and Khwaja Imran registered -3°C, while Toba Achakzai saw temperatures plummet further to a frigid -4°C. This marks one of the coldest starts to winter in recent memory for these parts of Balochistan.
Significant Snow Accumulation Reported
The snowfall has led to substantial accumulation, transforming landscapes into winter wonderlands. Toba Achakzai, for example, boasts an estimated 1.5 feet of snow. Similarly, Khojak Top has nearly one foot, and Chaman reports roughly ten inches. These significant snow depths are creating both picturesque scenes and logistical challenges for transportation.

Wider Impact Across the Province
Beyond the immediate snowfall zones, other areas of Balochistan are also experiencing intensified cold. Qila Saifullah and its adjacent regions have seen significant rainfall, which has amplified the chill. In contrast, Kan Mehtarzai and Muslim Bagh are reporting intermittent snowfall. Weather officials forecast that rain and snowfall in Qila Saifullah will likely continue until the evening, impacting daily life.

Mastung and Southern Regions Join the Freeze
Mastung has now recorded its first snowfall of the winter season, blanketing the city in white and causing noticeable temperature drops. Additionally, rainfall in Kharan, Panjgur, and their surrounding areas contributes to a colder seasonal start across southern parts of the province. Consequently, the entire region prepares for sustained cold weather, highlighting the widespread impact of this early winter blast.
