Punjab University Takes Action Against Illegal Tree Cutting
Punjab University (PU) recently took decisive action, removing the director of the Shaikh Zayed Islamic Centre (SZIC) amid serious allegations of illegal tree cutting on its campus. Consequently, this move underscores the university’s commitment to environmental preservation and accountability.
Official Removal and Interim Appointment
On Wednesday, an official notification from the university registrar confirmed the immediate removal of Prof Dr Muhammad Abdullah from his duties. Notably, Dr. Muhammad Ali Shah, Vice Chancellor and chairman of the SZIC Board of Governors, initiated this decision. Furthermore, the Vice Chancellor appointed Prof. Dr. Samina Saadia as the acting director of SZIC. She will temporarily manage the center until the federal government appoints a permanent director.
Upholding Environmental Standards
The university spokesperson highlighted that Prof Abdullah had served as SZIC director since March 2023. Subsequently, copies of the removal order have been circulated to relevant authorities for necessary follow-up. Expressing his strong disapproval, Vice Chancellor Dr. Muhammad Ali Shah unequivocally condemned the environmental violation. He termed it an “unforgivable crime,” vowing strict action against all involved. Moreover, he reiterated the administration’s top priorities: safeguarding the university’s vital green spaces and ensuring rigorous adherence to environmental laws.
