Historic Appointment: Azad Kashmir Appoints First Woman Chief Economist

In a groundbreaking move, Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) has appointed its first woman chief economist within the Planning and Development (P&D) Department. This historic decision marks a significant milestone for gender representation in senior policy-making roles across the region. Mahnaz Faheem, a distinguished professional, received a promotion from BS-19 to the prestigious BS-20 position. The Services and General Administration Department officially issued the notification for her appointment on Thursday. Her elevation to this crucial role has garnered widespread appreciation.
Mahnaz Faheem’s Illustrious Career and Academic Excellence
The Selection Board-I, chaired by the chief secretary, formally approved Faheem’s promotion during its meeting on December 9 last year. Previously, she served as a chief of section within the P&D Department, demonstrating her deep understanding of the region’s development needs. Furthermore, her career trajectory showcases consistent growth and commitment to public service.
Faheem began her journey in the AJK civil service in 1997 as a planning officer. This followed her successful completion of a Master of Business Administration degree from Quaid-e-Azam University, Islamabad. Subsequently, she pursued further academic excellence, earning a master’s degree in gender and development from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom. Notably, she was among the first two Chevening scholars from AJK, highlighting her academic prowess and leadership potential.

Academic Achievements and Contributions
- She achieved a gold medal in her Bachelor of Science degree, specializing in double mathematics and physics, from the University of Azad Jammu and Kashmir.
- Moreover, her commitment extended beyond academia into practical relief efforts. She actively contributed to two UNDP-funded projects after the devastating 2005 AJK earthquake, demonstrating her dedication to community welfare.
