RDA Overhauls Murree Road Expansion Project: Key Changes & Costs

The Rawalpindi Development Authority (RDA) has announced a substantial revision to its Murree Road expansion project. Initially, the plan called for widening the road by 15 feet. However, this has been dramatically increased to a significantly wider expansion on both sides, specifically between Liaquat Bagh and Chandni Chowk. Consequently, the project’s estimated cost has surged to an impressive Rs. 17 billion, a significant leap from the earlier estimate of Rs. 8 billion. This major overhaul aims to modernize critical infrastructure in Rawalpindi, easing traffic flow for countless commuters.
Why the Murree Road Expansion Needs a Rework
According to an RDA official, the updated blueprint now incorporates the construction of dedicated service roads. These essential service roads will span the three-kilometer stretch, specifically designed to mitigate existing traffic congestion and enhance overall vehicle movement. Furthermore, the authority submitted this refined proposal to the Punjab government. This action followed specific recommendations from the district administration, which suggested crucial modifications to the original design, ensuring a more effective solution.
Addressing Rawalpindi’s Traffic Challenges
This extensive traffic improvement project awaits vital approval for its inclusion in the Annual Development Programme. The revised design demands the acquisition of 48 kanals of land, representing a substantial requirement for urban development. Notably, land procurement alone is projected to cost approximately Rs. 17.7 billion. This significant expenditure highlights the sheer scale of the undertaking, reflecting the commitment to enhancing the city’s infrastructure.
Meanwhile, officials confirm that surveys for this extensive land acquisition are already in full swing. Construction is anticipated to commence promptly once the provincial government releases the necessary funds. Ultimately, this corridor aims to achieve a signal-free status from Marrir Chowk to Faizabad, significantly streamlining daily commutes and reducing travel times. This will transform the urban landscape.
New Parking Plazas to Ease Congestion
In a related development plan, the RDA has additionally proposed the construction of two state-of-the-art parking plazas. These facilities will specifically address the growing demand for convenient parking solutions across Rawalpindi. This forward-thinking approach tackles urban challenges head-on.
Details of Proposed Parking Facilities
- Benazir Bhutto Hospital Parking Plaza: This substantial facility is planned on five kanals of land. It will feature a projected cost of Rs. 1.4 billion and aims to accommodate approximately 4,800 vehicles. This will greatly benefit hospital visitors and staff.
- Commercial Market Rawalpindi Parking Plaza: Another impressive five-storey parking plaza is envisioned for the bustling Commercial Market area. This larger facility is estimated to cost Rs. 2.6 billion. It will uniquely combine essential commercial spaces with extensive parking, offering capacity for 7,000 vehicles and 1,000 shops. Thus, it will serve as a multi-functional urban hub.
The Future of Rawalpindi’s Infrastructure
The revised Murree Road expansion project, alongside the strategically proposed parking solutions, signifies a comprehensive and forward-thinking approach to urban development in Rawalpindi. Ultimately, these critical initiatives seek to alleviate persistent traffic woes, enhance vital infrastructure, and vigorously support economic growth throughout the region. Local residents and daily commuters eagerly anticipate the successful completion of these crucial projects, which promise a more streamlined and efficient urban experience for everyone.
